If you are not paying for the product, remember that YOU are the product.
While PUBG does make money from in-app purchases, their hidden source of revenue is evil (sort of). They sell your data!
Selling Players Data
But the data in question here is primarily your voice chat. You see, the in-build voice chat option gives a peek into all of our lives. By listening into the audio from a nearby television or other devices, they pick up keywords which are, in-turn sold to advertisers for a large profit.
Look into the search term ‘Alphonso’.
Came across this when I was surprised to see a targeted ad about some kind of a turtle conservation plan on Instagram moments after I had watched a youtube video. But the funny thing was that the video had nothing to do with turtle conservation but it did happen to mention it a couple of times.
Checked my phone and found PUBG running in the background (forgotten to close it after a sesh).
Had similar experiences multiple times after realizing what was actually happening.
In-App Purchases
The shopping section in game allows users to buy carates, clothes, cards & skins using real money.Royale pass is one of the revenue generating trick by tenent.
Then, the main way it makes money is that it acts as an advertisement for the bigger and much more optimized PC version which isn’t free. The closest analogy i can think of is a singer posting his hit songs on YouTube so that people will be enticed to buy the album.
Promotions
Any game earns money by doing promotions as if you remember like when couple a weeks ago MI:Fallout was released, PUBG changed it's theme, bg music, and even launched clothes for it… I hope you get what I am trying to point out.
